Special KDIGO Defy Dialysis Edition 3/3

In partnership with

Hello there!

I’ve been getting some questions this week about healthy fats, and one in particular stood As a wrap up of our special edition, I picked another question we received:

Kirby, what does KDIGO recommend for optimal care models for people with CKD, including education, counseling, and support?

Here’s my take:

When you’re managing CKD, it's not just about what you eat or the medications you take—it’s about having a well-organized, supportive care system in place.

According to the KDIGO 2024 guidelines, a strong care model for CKD patients involves more than just regular doctor’s visits.

It includes education, counseling, and a network of support to help you stay on top of your health.

What’s KDIGO’s "Optimal Model of Care" in 2024?

The updated KDIGO guidelines emphasize that CKD care must be comprehensive and patient-centered. This means integrating not only medical treatment but also education and support services tailored to each patient’s needs.

  1. Patient Education – KDIGO stresses the importance of giving patients easy-to-understand, actionable information about CKD, diet, medications, and lifestyle changes. The goal is to empower you to take control of your health. A well-informed patient makes better decisions that can slow the progression of CKD.

  2. Counseling – Emotional and psychological counseling play a critical role in managing CKD. KDIGO recommends that counseling be part of the care model, helping patients cope with the anxiety, stress, and lifestyle changes that come with chronic illness.

  3. Support Networks – KDIGO highlights the importance of having a supportive team, including doctors, dietitians, family members, and even patient communities. This team helps you stay consistent with treatment, diet, and regular monitoring.

Stop thinking that managing CKD is something you have to do alone.

With the right support and education, you’ll be able to make the necessary lifestyle changes, manage your health, and avoid dialysis.

All this brings me back to RenalTracker’s flagship program, the Kidney Preservation Protocol.

It’s designed specifically for CKD patients like you, to get the education, counseling and support network -- all in one.

…and best part, it only takes 12 weeks.

Here are three brand-new kidney-friendly recipes to include in the next newsletter!

Recipe 1: Spinach & Mushroom Egg Scramble

Why It’s Healthy

Eggs are a great source of protein without too much phosphorus when eaten in moderation. Spinach and mushrooms add fiber and nutrients while keeping the dish low in potassium and sodium, making it a healthy and satisfying breakfast for CKD patients.

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • ½ cup spinach (chopped)

  • ¼ cup mushrooms (sliced)

  • 1 tablespoon onion (chopped)

  • Salt (optional, use low-sodium) and pepper to taste

Directions

  1. Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat.

  2. Add onions and mushrooms, sautéing until soft.

  3. Add spinach and cook until wilted.

  4. Beat the eggs in a bowl and pour them into the pan.

  5. Scramble the eggs with the vegetables until fully cooked.

  6. Season with salt and pepper, then serve.
